Colombo:
Anura Dissanayake was sworn in as the ninth President of Sri Lanka on Monday. This is the first time a leftist leader has taken charge as the head of state. Dissanayake belongs to the Marxist-minded Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP). The swearing-in ceremony took place at the Presidential Secretariat in Colombo. Chief Justice Jayantha Jayasuriya administered the oath to Dissanayake.
Second preference votes counted for the first time in an election
For the first time in the election, second preference votes were counted for the post of President. This happened after Dissanayake and Samagi Jana Sandhaneya candidate Sajith Premadasa failed to secure the required vote percentage. After this, the counting of second preference votes became necessary. The final results were declared by the Election Commission at 7 pm on Sunday. According to the commission, Dissanayake won the presidency with 42.31 percent of the votes, while Premadasa came second and incumbent President Ranil Wickremesinghe, who was eliminated after the first round, came third.

Thanking Prime Minister Modi, Dissanayake posted, “PM Modi, thank you for your support. I share your commitment to strengthening the relationship between our countries. Together, we can work towards enhancing cooperation for the benefit of our people and the entire region.”
Indian High Commissioner met
The Indian High Commissioner was one of the first to meet Dissanayake after his victory was announced on Sunday. India’s decisive political and economic support during Sri Lanka’s economic crisis of 2022 gave a huge boost to the relationship between the two countries. In a time of dire need, India showed unwavering commitment to its neighbour, providing US$4.5 billion in cash and resources.
Why is this a matter of happiness for China
Let us tell you that Anura Disanayake comes from a Marxist background and he is also more inclined towards China. In such a situation, his becoming the President of Sri Lanka is a matter of happiness for China. With Disanayake becoming the President, there can definitely be a change in the political direction of Sri Lanka. Along with this, Disanayake’s policies can also be useful for the economic revival of the country. (Input also from IANS)
