The Volkswagen Taigun, launched on September 23, 2021, has turned three years old today in the Indian market. As per SIAM wholesales data, the Taigun has sold a total of 67,140 units in the domestic market till end-August 2024 and 32,742 units have been shipped to overseas markets. Given that the combined domestic and export sales add up to 99,882 units, the remaining 118 units to the cumulative 1,00,000 sales milestone would have been achieved in the first few days of September 2024.

From the first table, one can see that the Taigun saw its highest domestic sales in FY2023 with 21,736 units, though dispatches have been slowing down slightly since. In terms of exports, Volkswagen shipped its highest number, 12,621 units, to overseas markets in FY2024.
The Taigun marked Volkswagen’s first foray into the midsize SUV segment, where it now faces fierce competition from the Tata Curvv, Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, Toyota Hyryder and other SUVs in this category. It is offered only with two petrol engines – a 115hp, 175Nm, 1.0-litre turbo-petrol engine or a 150hp, 250Nm 1.5-litre turbocharged unit – both of which get manual and automatic options.
VW’s midsize SUV is currently priced between Rs 10.90 lakh and Rs 18.70 lakh, as there are special offers available on entry-level and top-spec variants. In addition, potential buyers of the Taigun could avail up to Rs 3.07 lakh in total discounts and benefits during the festive season.
A little over a year after its launch, the Volkswagen Taigun secured a five-star Global NCAP crash test rating and later in June 2024, the SUV was fitted with six airbags as standard.
