Transport Ministry introduces GPS Toll Collection System free travel upto 20km know details -lattestnews24

If you also consider the hassle of toll as a problem, then there is a news of relief now. The government has changed the transport rules. Now the toll will be deducted through GPS. The Ministry of Road and Transport has approved the satellite based toll collection system. So will Fastag not be used now? What will the existing Fastag be used for? We are going to give you the answers to all these questions here.

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has issued a new notification. According to which, toll collection in India will now be done through satellite based technology i.e. GPS. For this, Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS), Global Positioning System (GPS) and On Board Units (OBU) will be used which will already be present in the vehicles.

What will happen to Fastag?
The use of Fastag will continue for now. For now, toll will continue to be deducted through Fastag and Automatic Number Recognition Technology (ANPR).

Free travel up to 20 kms
According to the new rules, there will be no toll for travelling up to 20 kms. Separate lanes will be made for vehicles with GNSS, OBU. This means that you will not have to spend extra time on toll now. Vehicles with GNSS, OBU devices will have to pay only the charge for the distance they have covered on the road. Vehicles that are not registered in India and do not have GNSS devices will be charged through the old toll collection system.

How will automatic toll be deducted?
Satellite technology is going to play an important role in toll collection through the new system. Global Positioning System (GPS) and On Board Units (OBU) will be installed in vehicles which will track the vehicle. They will share this information with the satellite. That is, the satellite will be measuring the distance travelled by the vehicle at that time. GPS and GNNS devices will help in this task. Also, cameras installed on the highway will confirm the location of the vehicle. This will enable double verification of the distance travelled by the vehicle. Charges will be collected for this distance.

Actually, the new system has been implemented to ease traffic on the highway. At present, drivers have to wait for several minutes to pay at the toll plaza. This also causes jam at the toll plaza and drivers’ time is wasted. Now with the advent of GPS system, toll will be deducted by measuring the distance covered by the vehicle. This new system will initially be implemented on some major highways and expressways.
