First Muslim from Jammu and Kashmir in Indian Administrative Service (IAS) Officer Mohammad Shafi Pandit died on Thursday. He was 80 years old. According to Pandit’s family, he was diagnosed with cancer about a month ago, after which he was being treated at a hospital in Delhi. Mohammad Shafi Pandit had served in many high positions. He was a very honest and noble person. He always helped everyone.

When the then Chief Minister welcomed him

Pandit was the first Muslim from Jammu and Kashmir to pass the civil services examination in 1969. It is said that when Mohammad Shafi Pandit returned to Jammu and Kashmir after completing his IAS training, he was welcomed by the then Chief Minister Ghulam Mohammad Sadiq at the Srinagar airport.

Mohammad Shafi Pandit was a 1969 batch IAS officer who served in important positions in both Jammu and Kashmir and the Centre.

Career of Mohammed Shafi Pandit

Mohammad Shafi Pandit was born on August 15, 1947 in a simple family. He completed his MSc in Geology. After completing his studies from here, he started working as a lecturer in Amar Singh College. Along with teaching students, he also prepared for the UPSC exam. He also got success. After passing the IAS exam, his career changed completely and he became an inspiration for Kashmiri youth.

Positions held by Mohammed Shafi Pandit

During his illustrious career, he was the Chief Secretary of Jammu and Kashmir. Later, he was entrusted with the responsibility of Chairman of Jammu and Kashmir Public Service Commission (PSC), which he performed very well. As PSC Chairman, he took many important decisions related to improving the recruitment process and ensuring merit-based selection. Apart from this, as Joint Secretary in the Government of India in 1992, he also played an important role in implementing the Mandal Commission report. His last responsibility in the government was as the head of the autonomous Jammu and Kashmir Public Service Commission.
