New Delhi:
Chief Justice DY Chandrachud said on Thursday that since independence, about 37,000 decisions of the Supreme Court have been translated into Hindi and now the process of translating them into other regional languages is underway.
The Chief Justice said this during the hearing of a case. Justice JB Pardiwala and Justice Manoj Mishra were also present on the bench with him. Justice Chandrachud said that after Hindi, “now Tamil is at the forefront.” He said that the apex court is in the process of translating its decisions into regional languages recognized by the Constitution.
The apex court launched the e-SCR project in 2023 to provide free access to its judgments to lawyers, law students and the general public. Lawyers use e-SCR to cite previous judgments in support of their arguments during hearings.
The Chief Justice said, “Please use our e-SCR to refer to neutral citations (of cases).” He said that Supreme Court judgments are now being translated into regional languages with the help of artificial intelligence (AI) to ensure that they can reach district courts across the country. The Chief Justice said that the final translation is reviewed through human intervention.
While launching the e-SCR project, the apex court had said that the judgments will be available on the apex court’s website, its mobile app and the judgment portal of the National Judicial Data Grid (NJDG). The e-SCR project is an initiative to provide a digital version of the judgments of the apex court.
