Former Tamil Nadu minister Senthil Balaji has been granted conditional bail by the Supreme Court in the cash for job case. Senthil Balaji was arrested by the ED on June 14 last year on charges of money laundering. Senthil Balaji is accused of money laundering related to the cash for job scam while he was the Transport Minister in the AIADMK government.
The ED had filed a 3,000-page chargesheet against Balaji in the Supreme Court on August 12 last year. Balaji was arrested by the ED in a dramatic manner. He was first questioned for several hours, then he complained of pain in his chest, after which he was taken to the hospital. The Income Tax Department had raided his house in connection with claims of taking bribes between 2011 and 2015 from people looking for jobs in the state transport department.
The conspiracy was allegedly hatched to obtain bribes from candidates for recruitment as drivers, conductors, junior tradesmen, junior engineers and assistant engineers in the transport corporation during the year 2014-15. The ED alleged that “the entire recruitment process was done in a fraudulent and dishonest manner. It was carried out as per the list provided by Shanmugam, Ashok Kumar and Karthikeyan as per the instructions of Balaji.”
It is alleged that these four collected money from the candidates on behalf of Balaji for issuing appointment orders. The candidates had alleged that those who had paid the money.
