Revenge complete… : After Badlapur encounter these posters were put up in Mumbai, politics intensifies

Shinde, accused of sexually harassing two minor girls in a school in Maharashtra’s Badlapur city, died in retaliatory firing by the police on Monday evening after he allegedly snatched a policeman’s pistol and fired a shot. Politics has now heated up in this case. On the other hand, after the Badlapur encounter case, banners of Devendra Fadnavis have been put up at many places in Mumbai. In which it is written, “Revenge is complete.” However, the name of the party is not written on many banners.

Fadnavis is the target of Congress

On one hand, posters of “Badla Pura” with a photo of Devendra Fadnavis holding a gun in his hand have been put up at various places in the city, while on the other hand, yesterday Congress tweeted the same photo with the crime statistics in Nagpur and wrote, “Nagpur has been turned into Mirzapur.” Maharashtra Congress has directly targeted Devendra Fadnavis for the poor state of law and order in Nagpur district.

Maharashtra Congress said that the way criminal incidents are increasing in the Home Minister’s district Nagpur, it is clear that Devendra Fadnavis has turned Nagpur into Mirzapur. Congress party has tweeted a picture on social media regarding how criminal activities have increased in Nagpur. According to this picture, 6839 criminal cases have been registered in Nagpur city in the last 6 months. Out of which there are 213 cases of rape, 320 cases of molestation of women, 172 cases of POCSO, 134 cases of half murder, 138 cases of theft and 61 cases of murder.

Political uproar over the encounter of the accused

Bharatiya Janata Party has put up banners at some places in the city targeting Maha Vikas Aghadi. In which it is said that during the period of Maha Vikas Aghadi, the police used to extort money for the government and now the police protects the public. Many questions are being raised about the Badlapur encounter. The opposition alleges that many things are being hidden in this case. After the encounter of Akshay Shinde, accused of sexually harassing two girl students, there has been a political uproar in Maharashtra.

Why did the encounter of the accused happen?

According to the police, Shinde was killed in a police van in ‘self-defense’ after he allegedly snatched a gun from a policeman while being taken from Taloja jail to Badlapur in connection with the investigation of a case registered on the basis of a complaint by his ex-wife. Opposition leaders have questioned the circumstances of “Shinde’s death in an encounter”. At the same time, the state government has claimed that the police fired at Shinde in “self-defense” when he snatched a policeman’s gun and fired, injuring an assistant inspector.

Why are questions being raised on the encounter

Leaders of the opposition alliance Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) in Maharashtra have questioned the state government’s claim and demanded a judicial inquiry into the incident. BJP’s Mumbai unit chief Ashish Shelar told reporters on Tuesday, “The police have collected concrete evidence. The police shot at him (Shinde), but the opposition parties are questioning the circumstances of the incident. The opposition parties are behaving as if they have been ‘encountered’.”

Supriya Sule and Sanjay Raut asked questions

NCP (SP) MP Supriya Sule has accused the Maharashtra government of inconsistencies in its statement regarding the circumstances of Akshay Shinde’s death in police custody. She said how could an accused whose face was covered with a black cloth and who was handcuffed snatch a pistol from a policeman in a moving vehicle. Sule said in Baramati, “I had demanded that after the trial, the accused should be hanged publicly so that a strong message is sent to the society.”

Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut expressed doubts over the ‘encounter death’ of Akshay Shinde, an accused in the Badlapur sexual harassment case, and claimed that the state government was trying to protect the school management. Uddhav Thackeray’s party demanded a High Court-monitored probe into the incident and called it an example of ‘state-sponsored terrorism’. Raut said that although this ‘encounter’ is suspicious, there is no need to show sympathy towards such an accused.

What is the police’s claim on the encounter

On the other hand, a police officer claimed that Akshay Shinde, the accused in the Badlapur case, had said after snatching the pistol in the police car that he would not spare anyone. Police inspector Sanjay Shinde, who fired at the accused, said that Akshay’s behavior indicated that he would kill everyone, so he fired in self-defense.

Opposition is the target of Mahayuti

Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Home Minister Devendra Fadnavis have said that the police fired in self-defence. Shelar accused the MVA constituents- Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray), Nationalist Congress Party (Sharadchandra Pawar) and Congress- of doubting every move of the ruling Mahayuti alliance in Maharashtra. He said, “MVA leaders are power hungry, these are the same people who had expressed sympathy for Afzal Guru (Kashmiri terrorist convicted in the 2001 Parliament attack case, who was hanged).”

Claiming full support to the police, Shelar said what happened to Akshay Shinde was his destiny. “It was God’s justice,” he said. Shelar also criticised NCP (SP) leader Sharad Pawar, who had questioned the transfer of Akshay Shinde from Taloja jail and demanded a thorough probe into the incident. “What should they (police) do when someone becomes aggressive against the police? The person who lays his hand on a policeman’s gun should meet the same fate as Akshay Shinde. Opposition parties are inspired by ‘urban Naxals’,” the BJP leader alleged.
