New Delhi:
Telecom operators who have failed to stop spam calls and have not paid the fines imposed on them should have their bank guarantees encashed to recover the fines. According to media reports published on Wednesday, this order has been given by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) to the Department of Telecommunications (DoT).
According to reports published in the media, TRAI has the power to cancel the license of telecom companies that do not follow the rules of TRAI Act, but considering this as the last step, a proposal has been made to recover the dues of ₹ 115 crore from their bank guarantee, which is being done for the first time. This step is also being taken because these defaulting companies did not take any action or make any payment despite sending several reminders.
According to the news published in the newspapers, government companies BSNL and MTNL are the biggest defaulters in this list, which have dues of about ₹ 50 crores. After these two government companies, the names of Bharti Airtel, Vodafone Idea and Reliance Jio are in the defaulter list.
A few months ago, several government bodies had jointly planned to take steps to deal with the problem of unwanted, unknown calls and online fraud. Several top regulators and ministries including TRAI, SEBI, RBI, Union Home Ministry and Telecom Ministry had jointly prepared a plan.
It was also said in media reports that telecom carriers had started the caller ID service in some sectors only after coming under pressure from the government and TRAI.
