Meghalaya: Woman gave birth to a child in the hospital toilet, questions raised after the death of the newborn

Guwahati:

A woman gave birth to a baby in the toilet of a civil hospital in Ri-Bhoi district of Meghalaya on Saturday evening. However, the baby died a few minutes later in this civil hospital in Nongpoh.

Actually, Monalisa Langi of Umden Devon had labor pains early in the morning. After this, she was first taken to Umden Primary Health Center, but from there the woman was referred to the Civil Hospital. She was admitted there around 4 am and initial medical care was given.

The woman’s husband, Richard Rimpit, said his wife complained of severe labour pains again in the evening and was given painkillers but they did not help. At around 6pm, while she was in the toilet, she experienced labour pains and gave birth to the baby. However, the newborn did not survive.

At the same time, civil society members of the Hynniewtrep Integrated Territorial Organisation (HITO) have accused the hospital administration of negligence.

The state health department has not yet responded to this.
