Blue Finch Secures Global Rights to Supernatural Horror ‘A Mother’s Embrace’

Film Overview

UK-based Blue Finch Films has acquired the worldwide distribution rights to “A Mother’s Embrace,” a supernatural horror film directed by Cristian Pons. The film, set against the backdrop of a storm-ravaged Rio de Janeiro in 1996, follows Ana, a young firefighter who confronts dark secrets and personal trauma while responding to an emergency at a retirement home.

Director and Storyline

Cristian Pons, known for her award-winning film “History of the Occult,” directs this chilling tale. Co-written with Gabriela Capello and André Pereira, the screenplay delves into themes of good versus evil, exploring how seemingly benevolent actions can mask darker intentions. Pons comments, “I wanted to examine how people, believing they are doing good, can inadvertently cause harm, and how this is manipulated for personal gain. The film also critiques how religion and politics have influenced our current troubled times.”

Cast and Production

Brazilian actress Marjorie Estiano, renowned for her role in Globo’s “Under Pressure” and the Locarno-winning “Good Manners,” leads the cast alongside Chandélie Braz and Xavier Drollas. The film is produced by Pereira and Mariana Muñiz under the Lupa Films banner, in collaboration with Pablo Guisa of Morbido in Mexico.

Producer Insights

Pereira highlights the cultural depth of the film, stating, “‘A Mother’s Embrace’ brings horror to life through a narrative rooted in our Latin American culture. The collaboration between Brazilian, Argentine, and Mexican teams represents a significant achievement in Latin American genre cinema. We are excited to present this film to audiences around the world.”

Muñiz adds, “We are thrilled to partner with Blue Finch. Their extensive experience and strong market presence give us confidence that ‘A Mother’s Embrace’ will achieve great success.”

Blue Finch’s International Slate

Blue Finch Films is also involved in several other notable projects, including the Sitges title “Zero,” the SXSW 2024 Midnighter Audience Award winner “Oddity,” and Adilkhan Yerzhanov’s thriller “Steppenwolf.”

Upcoming Premiere

“A Mother’s Embrace” is slated for its festival premiere later this year, with details to be announced soon. The film was initially showcased at the Fantastic Pavilion at Cannes last year.
