A three-storey building collapsed due to rain in Mohalla Zakir Colony of Thana Lohiya Nagar area of ​​Meerut, Uttar Pradesh on Saturday evening, in which about 15 members of a family were buried. Today, till 3 am on Sunday, in a rescue operation of about 10 hours, 11 people were pulled out of the debris and taken to the hospital, out of which, according to the District Magistrate, 6 people have died. 4 people are still feared to be buried under the debris.

People did not even get a chance to escape

Around 5 pm on Saturday evening, this three-storey building collapsed so fast that the people inside the house did not get a chance to come out. The news spread like fire in the area and within no time, a crowd of thousands started reaching the spot, but in front of three layers of heavy lintels, one above the other, the crowd of thousands also became helpless and failed to rescue the people buried under the rubble.

Machines could not reach the spot

As soon as the information was received, police and fire service personnel from several police stations arrived and carried out the rescue operation along with the local citizens. Due to the narrow lanes of Zakir Colony, a Muslim-dominated area, machines like JCB were unable to reach the spot, so the rescue operation was carried out manually.

Who all were buried under the rubble of the house?

This family runs a dairy by rearing buffaloes on the ground floor of this three-storey house built in an area of ​​300 yards in the narrow streets of Zakir Colony. More than 2 dozen buffaloes were also reported to be buried under the debris. 63-year-old Nafees and his three sons’ families lived in the houses built on the two floors above. Information came to light that three women, one man and 8 to 10 children were buried under the debris.

Help was taken from NDRF and SDRF

As soon as the breaking news was aired on media, the Chief Minister of the state Yogi Adityanath inquired about the incident from the District Magistrate, which created a stir in the administration. Soon, all the officers of the district including Commissioner Shelva Kumari J, ADG Dhruvkant Thakur started reaching the spot. The Commissioner told the media that three teams of NDRF and SDRF have been called, and help has also been sought from the Army.

Big difficulties in rescue

Four hours after this incident, NDRF and SDRF teams came and took over the front and with the help of small machines, the debris of the lintel was removed by cutting the iron rods and breaking them with hammers. Due to darkness at night, rain and crowd in the narrow streets, there were a lot of difficulties in the rescue operation. By 3 o’clock on Sunday morning, in a rescue operation of about 10 hours, 11 people were pulled out of the debris and taken to the hospital, out of which the death of 6 people has been confirmed by Meerut District Magistrate Deepak Meena.

Some members of this family were outside the house, who escaped from becoming victims of this accident. According to their statements, the administration believes that at the time of the incident, there were about 15 people in this house, including family and their acquaintances. By morning, 11 people have been rescued from the debris, there is still a possibility of 4 people being buried under the debris.
