Another encounter in UP, Zahid, accused of killing RPF jawans, killed in encounter

Lucknow:

A suspected liquor smuggler, allegedly involved in the killing of two Railway Protection Force (RPF) jawans last month, was killed on Tuesday after an encounter with the Uttar Pradesh police in Ghazipur district, officials said.
He said the suspect, who had a bounty of Rs 1 lakh on his head, was seriously injured in an encounter with the Noida unit of the Uttar Pradesh Special Task Force (STF) and the Ghazipur police team late Monday night. He was brought to the district hospital in Ghazipur for treatment, where he was declared dead on Tuesday morning.

He said that the accused has been identified as Mohammad Zahid alias Sonu (25), a resident of Patna (Bihar) and there was a cash reward of Rs one lakh on him. Additional Director General of Police Law and Order and STF Amitabh Yash said late on Monday night that on the night of 19/20 August, two RPF constables Javed Khan and Pramod were trying to stop the smuggling of illegal liquor in train number 15631 Barmer Guwahati Express, during which the liquor smugglers brutally beat up both the constables and threw them off the moving train, resulting in the death of both the constables.

ADG Law and Order and STF said that Mohammad Zahid was wanted in this case and a reward of Rs 1 lakh was announced on him. Ghazipur Superintendent of Police Iraj Raja said, “Jahid alias Sonu, a resident of Patna, was injured in the encounter, while two policemen were also injured. Raja said that Zahid was the main conspirator of the attack on RPF jawans. We had received information that he was once again trying to smuggle liquor through the same route near Dildarnagar.”

The SP said, “A team of Ghazipur police and STF’s Noida unit surrounded Zahid, following which an encounter took place in which he was seriously injured. Two policemen were also injured.”

He told reporters, “Zahid was first taken to CHC and from there he was referred to the district hospital, where doctors declared him dead. He died after the encounter. Further legal action is being taken.”

Six others involved in the August 19-20 incident have already been arrested after two separate encounters, the official said.
