J&K elections: Engineer Rashid and Jamaat-e-Islami came together 3 days before voting, know why they came together

Srinagar:

The Jammu and Kashmir Assembly Elections took a new turn on Sunday when a strategic alliance was formed between the Awami Ittehad Party and Jamaat-e-Islami. Both will fight the assembly elections together and support each other’s candidates. Both have come together just three days before the first phase of voting. A senior AIP official told NDTV, “This initiative came from Engineer Rashid’s party and the Jamaat agreed to it because in the end it is a fight for a bigger cause, not for the chair.”

According to him, both the parties know that if they contest the elections alone, their votes will be divided. He said, “But now by fighting together, both will consolidate their votes especially in South and North Kashmir.”

According to information, in the joint meeting held on Sunday, the AIP delegation was led by AIP supremo and Member of Parliament Engineer Rashid and AIP chief spokesperson Inam Un Nabi. The JeI delegation was led by Ghulam Qadir Wani.

Emphasis on the need to work together

At the core of the meeting was the current political situation in Jammu and Kashmir, with both sides emphasizing the need to work together in the larger interest of the population of the region.

After extensive deliberations, it was agreed that AIP will support JeI-backed candidates in Kulgam and Pulwama. Similarly, JeI will extend its support to AIP candidates across Kashmir.

Both sides ready for ‘friendly match’

In areas where both the AIP and the JeI have fielded candidates, the alliance has agreed to a “friendly contest”, especially in constituencies like Langate, Devsar and Jainapora. In other constituencies, mutual cooperation will be enhanced to ensure a unified approach to the elections.

According to him, the aim of this move is to prevent division of votes. He further said, “Both the parties have the same base cadre, so this is a good move on their part.”

Interestingly, both sides in their agreement have emphasized on resolving the Kashmir issue and promoting lasting and dignified peace in the region.

‘The goal is to ensure a resounding victory’

He highlighted the rapidly evolving political landscape regionally and internationally and stressed that neither the JEI nor the AIP can afford to remain passive observers.

After reaching the agreement, the leadership of both AIP and JEI groups have called upon their cadres to spread the message of support for each other’s candidates in accordance with the agreement.

“The goal is to ensure a landslide victory for the AIP and JeI candidates, ensuring that the people of Jammu and Kashmir have strong representatives who can express their sentiments and aspirations,” said a member of the Jamaat group.

Let us tell you that Jamaat-e-Islami was banned by the Home Ministry in 2019. This year this ban has been extended for another 5 years. This is the reason why its candidates are contesting the elections as independents.
