Guwahati:
A 34-year-old man from Manipur’s hill district Churachandpur has been arrested by the Assam Special Task Force (STF) from Guwahati for his involvement in sabotage activities linked to insurgent group United Kuki National Army or UKLA.
STF sources said the accused LS Yosef Chongloi handled the finance department for UKNA and is suspected to be involved in sabotage activities in the border areas of Manipur and Assam.
The UKLA is not part of the Suspension of Operations (SOO) agreement in Manipur. STF sources said the sabotage activities included a bomb attack that destroyed a bridge on National Highway 2 at Saparmina in Manipur in April and an ambush on fuel tankers in Tamenglong.
Sources said the Inspector General of Police (STF) ordered the arrest of Chongloi based on intelligence that he was operating from Beltola area under Basishta police station in Guwahati. He has been charged under several sections of the Indian Justice Code (BNS) and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, the stringent anti-terror law. The charges include waging war against the state, conspiring against the state, collecting firearms and concealing them for waging war.
Amid ethnic tensions in Manipur, Assam Police and STF are actively conducting operations. STF sources had said that in June this year, a man was arrested in Assam for allegedly buying drone parts to supply to a terrorist group in the valley areas of Manipur. STF personnel recovered a large cache of drone parts from him.
The same month, a man who allegedly tried to enter Manipur carrying 10 high-end drone batteries for a terrorist group was also arrested by the Assam STF. However, a filmmakers association of the Kuki tribes in Manipur denied the allegations against a prominent member of the association who had only purchased drone batteries for work.
