Pulsar Boards ‘A Survivor’s Tale’ – A True Story of Resilience and Emancipation

Pulsar Content has acquired “A Survivor’s Tale,” a gripping new film from KG Prods., the production company founded by Costa Gavras and Michèle Ray-Gavras. This historical drama, starring Salomé Dewaels, known for her role in Xavier Giannoli’s Venice Film Festival entry “Lost Illusions,” explores the extraordinary life of Marguerite de la Rocque.

Directed by Micha Wald, a Belgian filmmaker making his mark with his debut feature “In the Arms of My Enemy,” “A Survivor’s Tale” brings to life the harrowing true story of Marguerite de la Rocque. In the 16th century, Marguerite, a young noblewoman condemned for being pregnant as a result of a violent assault, is abandoned on a desolate island near Newfoundland. With her rapist and maid left alongside her, Marguerite faces a grueling two-year struggle for survival on what is known as the “Island of Demons.”

As she endures starvation and the brutal cold, Marguerite’s quest to protect herself and her unborn child transforms into a powerful narrative of personal growth and liberation. The film, originally titled “L’île de la Demoiselle,” also features Louis Peres, a rising star from “For Night Will Come.”

Produced by Alexandre Gavras at KG Prods. in collaboration with Stenola Prods., the film follows their previous successful partnerships on “The Restless” and “A Silence.” Pulsar Content will handle international sales, launching the film at the Toronto International Film Festival.

In a statement, KG Prods. expressed their hope that Marguerite de la Rocque’s remarkable story will inspire women around the world, highlighting the indomitable strength of the human spirit. Pulsar emphasized the film’s relevance, noting its feminist and epic scope, which they believe will resonate deeply with global audiences.

Stenola Prods. added that while many survival stories are traditionally centered on male protagonists, Micha Wald’s film offers a profound and moving portrayal of Marguerite’s epic journey.

Principal photography is slated to begin in October in Brittany, with the film expected to wrap by mid-2025. The Jokers Films will handle the film’s release in France.
